CHENNAI: The new Alternate Train Accommodation System (ATAS) called Vikalp, through which waitlisted passengers of one train would get reserved tickets on another train, will be run as a pilot project for six months from November 1 only on the Delhi-Lucknow and Delhi-Jammu sectors.
No trains on Southern Railway or in any other part of the country would be eligible for this facility now, railway officials said.
Indian Railways recently announced this scheme which seeks to optimise the use of seats and berths on trains. Passengers with waitlisted tickets on one train, if they opt for ATAS, will be offered seats on another train leaving from a nearby station within 12 hours from the scheduled departure of the original train.
No additional charges will be collected for this switch, but it would be subject to seat availability in the substitute train, a policy document detailing this scheme indicated.
Railway officials said the scheme would be useful for passengers travelling by trains on busy routes where some trains were full always, but special trains ran empty.
