Jipmer to set up Rs 590cr organ transplantation
centre in Pondy

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has proposed to establish a centre for organ transplantation at `590 crore in several phases. The centre will perform transplant of organs and tissues like kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas, intestine, bone marrow and hand, said Jipmer director S C Parija in a release.The institute's governing body has approved the proposal for a dedicated transplantation centre to be designed according to international standards. It will have facilities for organ and tissue banking. It will have seven departments with another seven subdivisions in the areas of organ and tissue transplantation. It will have 200 beds including 65 in the ICU. Doctors and paramedics will be trained in organ and tissue transplant.
Parija said the institute recently constituted a high-level advisory committee and appointed six members to the committee. The members are Institute of Liver and Bilairy Sciences, Delhi, director S K Sarin, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisztion director Vimal Bhandari, Professor of Liver Transplant Surgery at Kings College Hospital, London, Mohammed Rela, Pappworth cardiac Transplant Centre, UK, deputy director Jeyan Parameswar, Chief of Organ Transplant, Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, Pranjal Modi, and chairman, Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai, K M Cherian.
Jipmer multi-organ transplantation programme secretary Biju Pottakkat said the institute will prepare a detailed project report for establishing the centre.
