Swathi murder case closed formally

Nearly a year after the sensational murder of a 24-year-old software professional at a city railway station, the `Swathi case' has attained finality, judicially. A city court has accepted the police report that it needs to be closed because the lone accused is dead.S Swathi, of Sourashtra Nagar in Choolaimedu, was murdered on June 24, 2016, at Nungambakkam railway station, and the accused, P Ramkumar, `committed suicide' in the Central Prison at Puzhal on September 19.
An investigating officer said, “We submitted a detailed closure report before the magistrate court in Egmore with substantial evidence to prove Ramkumar's death was a suicide.“
The XIV Metropolitan Magistrate B C Gopinath admit ted the copies and issued an order for formal closure of the case, he said.
The case, initially investigated by the Government Railway Police, was transferred to the Chennai city police.When a team cornered Ramkumar in his native village T Meenakshi Puram in Tirunelveli district on July 1, he his throat in a suicide bid.
He was brought to Chennai and lodged at the prison in Puzhal. Several appeals for bail were dismissed and Ramkumar `committed suicide' inside the prison after biting a live cable on September 19.
