TN Has Max Seats Under Govt Quota
Every year, the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association organises a celebration on July 1 for Doctors' Day . On Saturday , men in white coats decided to join hands to demand reservation for super specialty seats in state-run medical colleges. They also launched the `Our State, Our Seat,' campaign. In an emergency executive committee meeting, state secretary Dr P Balakrishnan said that with 192 seats, Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of super-specialty seats in the country under the government quota. “After surrendering 50% of the seats, the state was allowed to reserve 50% of the seats for students from its states. Doctors in government service were given incentives. We are now told that counseling to all seats will be done by the Centre,“ he said.
Doctors, particularly super specialty aspirants, from four medical colleges -Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, Kilapuk Medical College, Government Medical College, Omandurar -besides doctors from Government Royapettah Hospital, Chengalpet and peripheral hospitals assembled for a meeting. The association has demanded 50% reservation for government doctors from the state quota, who can then be posted to super-specialty hospitals and government colleges, where treatment is free.“We have urged the state government to pass a bill in the Assembly to exempt super specialty courses from NEET, similar to the what it did for un dergraduate and postgraduate courses,' said state headquarters secretary Dr Nedunchezhiyan.
The state is awaiting the President's nod to enforce the two legislations it passed, but health minister C Vijaya Baskar has announced that 85% of the government quota seats will be reserved for state board students. In case of postgraduate courses, the state surrenders only 50% of the seats.
The association has urged the state to move the Supreme Court, as loss of super-speciality seats would directly affect tertiary care services in medical colleges and super-speciality hospitals. “Until an order is passed, the state should ensure counseling does not happen,“ he said.
