BENGALURU: Even a month after the direction issued by the Governor and Chancellor Vajubhai Vala, neither the University of Mysore nor the state government has initiated any action against the illegal recruitment of non-teaching staffers at the university during December 2016. On June 18, 2018, the Governor issued directions to the state government asking to terminate services of 120 non-teaching staffers who were recruited during December 2016 as those recruitments were found illegal by the inquiry committee constituted to look into the irregularities. The Governor even directed to file a criminal case against those who were involved in these recruitments.

When asked about the status, officials of state higher education department told The New Indian Express that the Governor had given 45 days’ time to submit action taken report, and they still had time. “The file has been forwarded to the higher education minister for further action and the deadline given by the Governor is not yet over,” said a senior department official. The university authorities said that they have written to the government seeking some clarification. Higher education minister GT Devegowda was unavailable for comments.

What did the probe report say?

The Governor had constituted a committee headed by Dr Nimbalkar to conduct an inquiry into the alleged illegal appointments at the University of Mysore. It was alleged that recruitments were made without getting permission from the government. The university also allegedly violated reservation norms, did not give advertisements and did not even issue public notices.

The committee which conducted the inquiry had submitted a detailed report to the Governor wherein it said over 120 non-teaching staffers were recruited illegally. Following the report, the Governor directed the state government to terminate services of such 120 employees immediately and also to file criminal cases against the then vice-chancellor of the university Prof KS Rangappa, then registrar of the university Prof Vishakanta and also the present registrar of the university Prof Rajanna.
