Tamil Nadu government will respond to the Centre on replacing UGC with Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) on or before July 7, higher education minister K P Anbalagan said in the assembly on Wednesday, in reply to leader of opposition M K Stalin, who questioned the uncertainty over funding to universities in Tamil Nadu, if UGC is replaced with NHEC.
“We will ensure that the state’s interests were not affected in the wake of the Centre deciding to replace the University Grants Commission with the NHEC. We have sought the opinions from vice chancellors of all the universities in Tamil Nadu as well as higher education experts and officials. We will send a proper reply to the Centre before July 7,” said Anbalagan.
The HRD ministry had last week proposed to replace the apex higher education regulator UGC with the HECI by repealing the UGC Act, 1951. According to the draft Act, HECI would focus solely on academic matters and monetary grants would be under the purview of the HRD ministry.
