Surveillance cameras to be installed for monitoring round-the-clock
With traffic congestion inside the Dr. MGR Central Bus Stand (New Bus Stand) becoming a perennial problem, the city police along with the Corporation has decided to create two additional exit points on the premises.
Currently, buses from Attur, Chennai, Mettur and Dharmapuri enter the bus stand through the arch on Omalur Main Road and leave the premises at the exit point near the bus depot.
Buses from Namakkal, Erode and Coimbatore enter and exit the premises near the depot. In the absence of additional exit points, congestion inside the bus stand delays arrival and departure of buses.
A recent meeting by the police with officials from various departments outlined the importance of having more entry/exit points.
On Tuesday, Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar along with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) R. Ramakrishnan, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited (TNSTC) officials from Salem and Villupuram division, corporation officials and private bus operators carried out inspection in the bus stand.
It was decided to create an opening in the right side bay near the hotel and also create an exit point near the arch so that buses from Attur and Chennai enter and leave the bus stand through these opening and exit point respectively.
Likewise, it was decided to create a new exit point in between the corporation cycle stand and the pay-and-use toilet for buses moving towards Namakkal, Erode and Coimbatore.
Mr. Sanjay Kumar told reporters that implementation of the new system will prevent chaos inside the premises and also ensure smooth flow of buses.
He also said that the issue of encroachment of space by shopkeepers and unauthorised taxi stand on the premises will be taken up with the corporation. Mr. Sanjay Kumar said that lack of CCTV’s in the bus stand is a major problem and steps will be taken for installation of cameras for round-the-clock monitoring.
