MBBS counselling extended by 2 days, 628 seats remain

There were 628 MBBS seats left in 22 medical colleges in the state at the end of the third day of the first phase of counselling on Wednesday. The counselling will be extended by two days up to Saturday, said selection committee secretary Dr Selvarajan.


On Wednesday, all seats in the BC category were taken and the last candidate from the rank list to take a government seat had 375 marks, at least 64 higher than last year.

When the counselling began on Monday, there were 2,447 seats in government medical colleges, 65 in ESIC, KK Nagar, 127 in Rajah Muthiah Medical College and 862 in self-financing medical colleges.

While all 757 open category seats were allotted to meritorious students by Tuesday, the 624 students in BC category were allotted seats in various government college based on their NEET 2018 scores.

The competition was tough as 1,279 students scored above 400 marks compared to 1,466 last year and 4,791 students scored above 300 marks compared to 2,569 last year.

On Wednesday, 957 candidates attended counselling and 869 were alloted seats.

Of these, 490 were allotted MBBS seats in government colleges. At the end of the day, there were 628 seats left, with 16 in BCM, 218 in MBC, 301 in SC, 68 in SCA and 25 in ST category.

In self-financing colleges, all OC seats were taken and 537 seats were left in other categories. In addition, there were 55 seats in Raja Muthiah College and 24 in ESIC.

While all OC seats at the Madras Dental College were taken, there were 54 seats left for other categories. Self-financing dental colleges had 963 seats left.

Meanwhile, the directorate general of health service is likely to update the vacancies in seats under the all-India quota (government colleges) and deemed universities by Thursday for round 2. Wednesday was the last day for students to join the allotted colleges.

In a notification on Wednesday, the DGHS has asked candidates who wish to resign from the UG seats allotted through online 15% AIQ/deemed/ central universities and ESIC to obtain the seat surrender receipt from the college through online counselling software. Facility for online reporting of resignation will be available till 3.00pm on Thursday, it said.
