TIRUVANNAMALAI : The Vellore Crime Branch Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) arrested three persons, including the Head of the Department (HoD), one professor and an office assistant of Padalesuwarar Polytechnic College in Cuddalore for allegedly leaking the question paper of third semester Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME) course.

The vice-principal, who is among the accused, is absconding.
Police said the question paper on ‘Strength of Materials’, a third semester subject of the DME course, was circulated among the polytechnic students in Arani through WhatsApp  on April 16.
The matter came to the notice of the authorities after a second year DME student of Dr MGR Polytechnic College in Arani alerted college principal Arumugan.

When the principal cross-checked the question paper at the examination hall with that of the leaked paper, he found that both were one and same. Arumugan immediately lodged a complaint at Arani Taluk Police Station. Subsequently, the case was transferred to Vellore CB-CID.Police sources said they narrowed in on the culprits by questioning the polytechnic students in Arani, Cuddalore and Panruti.

After monitoring the WhatsApp trail of the question paper, a CB-CID team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police K Chandrasekaran finally found out that the paper was leaked by the staff of Padalesuwarar Polytechnic College in Cuddalore.

Chandrasekaran told Express that Vice-Principal Vinoth Kumar took the question paper after opening the room where it was kept by using the office keys and made a photocopy of it with the help of office assistant Rajesh and two other academic staff. Rajesh sold it to a former student.
The CB-CID sources said Rajesh sold the question paper for `5,000 to a former student of the college.
The former student then sold it to other students, who spread it through WhatsApp. “We suspect that a teachers’ gang might have sold the question papers of other subjects as well. However, no complaint has been received in this regard,” said a Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department officer.

The police have booked vice-principal Vinoth Kumar (45), HoD of Electronic and Communications Madhu (30), Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department Professor Amba Sankar (32) and office assistant Rajesh (32).Except Kumar, the other three accused in the case have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
