CHENNAI: Low-tension domestic and commercial consumers will be able to get electricity connection in just one day under a new scheme that is all set to be rolled out from July 1. This one-day service connection scheme will not be open to special and multi-storeyed buildings, said State Electricity Minister P Thangamani, who announced the scheme in Chennai on Monday.
“The service connection, that can be applied for through the Tangedco web-portal www.tangedcogov.in or in person, will be made available on the same day for buildings within 100 feet from Tangedco’s electricity mains or within a maximum of 48 hours in cases which involve laying of underground service connection cable,” said the minister.
Those applying for domestic services may pay `1,600 for single-phase connections and `4,450 plus initial consumption charges for three-phase connections, and commercial service charges of `1,600 and `3,050 plus initial consumption charges respectively, online.
Asked whether the recent power outages were due to deficit, the minister said there had been no deficit in Tamil Nadu since 2015. “In fact, we have a surplus of 3000 MW.”
M Sai Kumar, chairman and managing director, Tangedco, was also present at the meeting.
Outage info through SMS
Tangedco, under the ‘Minsara Nanban’ scheme, will now send SMSes to consumers about scheduled and unscheduled power outages in their locality.Launching the scheme on Monday, Electricity Minister P Thangamani said that the customer-friendly initiative in line with the Centre’s ‘Urja Mitra’ scheme, would provide information of power outages due to maintenance activities in rural and urban areas. “The messages would be sent two days before the shutdown. In case a shutdown is due for Wednesday, the consumer would be informed of it on Monday,” said a spokesperson for the State discom.
