Despite having spent years near the dump yard by the Chitlapakkam lake, residents of the town panchayat are still waiting for action from the officials concerned.Even the presence of a school, a primary health centre, a community hall, a post office, and the panchayat office right next to the dump has not spurred officials to use the Venkatamangalam dump yard for sto ring the garbage.
“We are living in and breathing unhygienic air each day .The Venkatamangalam dump yard that is designated to take garbage from municipalities like Tambaram, Pallavaram and Sembakkam can also hold the waste generated by the 12,000odd residents of Chitlapak kam,“ said activist V Santhanam. He added that even if the garbage is removed twice a week to Venkatamangalam, it would bring relief to the residents of Chitlapakkam.
Chitlapakkam resident P Vishwanathan said there is no confirmation if the lake bed is an approved dump yard, but being used for this purpose has brought the lake bed to a pitiable state.
“It pollutes the ground water, which has its own consequences. All types of sewage are let into the lake. The damage being done to people, especially students at the Chitlapakkam Government High School and patients at the primary health centre, is not been talked about,“ he added.
A senior engineer from the municipality said that since it is a separate urban local body , garbage is not collectively dumped at Venkatamangalam, where waste from areas like Tambaram, Pammal, Pallavaram, and Anaghaputhur is dumped.
Residents also sought an underground sewage system so that sewage is not directed into the lake, and the inclusion of the town panchayat in the corporation zone so that work can be seamlessly carried out. Officials from the town panchayat were not available for comment.
