Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, based in Tirunelveli, will not suspend or initiate any action against two of its professors booked in a corruption case by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DV&AC).Vice-chancellor K Baskar said professors S Prabahar and P K Kalyani had faced an internal inquiry and that no violations had been found.“[This] University is an autonomous body and it is not necessary to follow government norms. As far as the university is concerned, they have not committed any mistake,“ Baskar said, when asked if the professors should be asked to step down till the investigation was over.
The issue would be tabled in the next syndicate meeting, he said. The principal secretaries of the state higher education and law departments are the government nominees on the syndicate.
The DV&AC had filed an FIR against Prabhahar, now Controller of Examination, and Kalyani, now head the department of English, on May 22 charging that they denied admission to eligible candidates to MA and M Phil courses in the department during 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-2015. The FIR states that the eligible candidates were refused admission in defiance of the state government's reservation policy .
The two were booked under IPC Sections 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), 465 (punishment for forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) and 471(using a forged document as a genuine one). All the 27 departments had followed the same procedure for the admission like the English department, Baskar said. “The demand for seats in all the courses is very less. There is no violation of any norms,“ he said.
DVAC officials said they were collecting more evidence to strengthen the case and would soon the two professors for questioning soon.
