The number of candidates who have submitted forms this year for engineering courses offered through single window counselling by Anna University has come down by 20,000.
The University has received 1,54,450 filled in forms this year as against over 1.71 lakh forms last year. While engineering education observers say the number of vacancies would go up, University officials do not expect a serious dip in the allotment of seats. Last year over 1.26 lakh seats remained vacant; this year it is expected to touch 1.36 lakh.
“More than one lakh students will get allotment through counselling. The number of allotments has always remained constant at 1.20 or 1.15 lakh,” said an official. University sources cite the delay in issue of forms as a reason for lower purchase this year. Normally, Anna University begins to issue forms several days ahead of class XII results. This year, forms sale began just a day ahead of results. “We have noticed that candidates often apply for engineering simply because they had bought the forms. This time delay in issue of forms has checked such tendencies,” a University faculty said.
