New V-C for MGR Medical University



The current Director of Medical Education (DME) S. Geethalakshmi has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. She will be the ninth V-C of the university and takes over from D. Shantaram.

Ms. Geethalakshmi received the appointment order from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday. Dr. Shantaram’s term ended on December 17. Though Stanley Medical College has seen many of its students take the post of DME, Dr. Geethalakshmi will be the first student from the college to hold the V-C post. She belongs to the 1974 batch and graduated in 1979. She went on to study microbiology in Madras Medical College, where she served as assistant professor. She has completed her Ph D degree from the MMC. Ms. Geethalakshmi has served as Dean of Tiruvannamalai Medical College, Kilpauk Medical College and Stanley Medical College. On January 31, 2014, she took over as the DME.

The Chief Minister recognised her services in managing the rescue operations during the Moulivakkam building collapse in June 2014. Dr. Geethalakshmi has also held the post of vice president of the Chennai chapter of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association.
