Chennai: Declaring illegal the ongoing strike by nurses of two private hospitals in the city, the Madras high court has said that when seriously injured patients are fighting for their lives in the hospitals, the staff nurses cannot be oblivious to the serious consequences of their strike.

Justice T Raja passed the common interim order while admitting two separate pleas moved by Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust hospital, Nungambakkam, and SRM Institutes for Medical Science, Vadapalani. "If the members of Global Nurses Association of Tamil Nadu, who are indulging in strike are not prohibited from resorting to strike, life of patients would be put to irreparable loss and injury. Therefore, the nurses are hereby injuncted from continuing their strike till further orders," the judge said.

The court also directed the city police to provide protection to the premises of two hospitas to ensure smooth ingress and egress of patients, doctors, and other staff till further orders.
