Sasikala’s parole rejected on technical grounds
It may be reconsidered if fresh application is made: Officials
Former AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala’s parole plea was rejected by the Prisons Department officials of Karnataka as it was not complete and did not have adequate documents.
Ms. Sasikala had moved for parole for 15 days through her lawyers, as her husband M. Natarajan is critically ill in Chennai. Parole application had gone along with medical certificate stating that her husband is suffering from kidney and liver failure.
Jail officials, however, rejected the application late on Tuesday evening saying it was incomplete as a certificate from a local MLA or MLC or gazetted officer that states he is seriously ill is not part of the application. If a fresh application is filed with this certificate, it may be considered again, said the officials.
Even if it is an emergency parole application, where the prison superintendent has powers to allow it, rules mandate that the jail head will seek the opinion of the local police station in Chennai on whether it could be processed, keeping in mind security and sensitivity concerns. However, the police are yet to approach their Chennai counterparts in this regard, according to sources.
Ms. Sasikala has been in jail since February after the Supreme Court upheld her conviction in a disproportionate assets case. She is serving a four-year term at the Bengaluru Central Jail along with two of her relatives, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran, in the same case. She has completed six months in prison, after which she becomes eligible to apply for parole.
