9-year-old sits for Class X exams in Assam

GUWAHATI: A Class V student from Assam's Darrang district appeared in the Class X state board examination that began from Thursday.

Shamim Mehfiz, a nine-year-old boy, was granted permission by the Secondary Education Board of Assam (Seba) to appear in this year's board examination.

"Yes, I am going to appear in the matriculation examination and I am hopeful about clearing it. Usually, I study for around five or six hours during the day. I put in four hours of study in the morning, one hour in the evening and two hours at night," Mehfiz said.

But Seba clarified that the boy's results would not be declared if he is unable to prove that he is at least 15 years of age. According to the rules of the board, a candidate has to be at least 15 to sit in the board examination.

A senior official of Seba said Mehfiz is aware of the board rules. "We have issued provisional admit cards to candidates who have mentioned their age as being less than 15 while submitting the forms. Before the results are declared, he or she will have to prove that he or she has attained the age of 15," the official said.

Though some students aspire to clear the board examination at an early age, mainly to set records, Seba rules do not allow for such cases, he added.

"Usually when we find in the application that a student is underage, we issue provisional admit cards. It is the duty of the candidate to prove his age later," the official said.
