Agra: A couple travelling on a Tamil Nadu bound train, on the Farah-Keetham route, were looted of valuables worth Rs 15 lakh at knife point by four masked assailants near the Mathura junction on Friday.
The incident took place in a first AC coach of the Tamil Nadu express, which had started from New Delhi.
According to the government railway police, Raj Kumar Garg (57) and his wife Saroj Garg (55) received several blows on their faces and heads while resisting the assailants.
The complaint lodged with the GRP said, "At around 1 am, four muscled men suddenly barged into our cabin and asked for our jewellery and cash. When we resisted, they attacked us with the butt of knife on our head and face, which led to profuse bleeding."
At the time of the incident, two armed railway protection force (RPF) personnel were on patrol in the moving train, but no security guard was present in the AC coach. Even the coach attendant was found missing during the incident which lasted for around 10 mins. After the incident, the assailants pull the chain of the train and ran into the surrounding jungle.
The victims were rushed to SN Medical College when the train reached Agra cantt station at around 2 am. The couple received several stitches. They later left for New Delhi in a bus.
According to sources in RPF, the assailants were probably tracking the couple ever since they boarded the train in New Delhi, as they quickly executed the act and did not leave any clues behind. They didn't attack two other girls and an old couple present in the same cabin.
"It might be possible that the coach attendant is also involved in the matter as he was missing at the time of the incident. He did not even inform the control room; it was the passengers who told RPF personnel about the incident," said the RPF personnel on the condition of anonymity.
Speaking on the incident, Sunil Sharma, divisional railway manager of Agra division,1 said, "We have set up a panel to enquire about the incident as the coach attendant did not respond in time. A security review would be done and the number of security personnel will also be increased in the trains, to provide more security to travelers."
In the last one year, four incidents of criminal activities in trains have been reported on the Farah Keetham route, including the case of a railway board official, Rakesh Srivastav, who along with his wife was looted of valuables.
