The Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) time till February 28 to rectify the deficiencies in order to qualify for additional seats.
An MCI team during a recent visit pointed out various inadequacies when the CMCH sought nod to increase MBBS seats by 100. This would take the CMCH’s total intake to 250, which was the maximum.
MCI norms mandated four demonstration rooms, while CMCH had only two. A single examination hall of over 2,000 sq m was required at the hospital. The hospital had three small examination halls, which put together will exceed 2,000 sq m. The MCI team did not accept it.
While the norms mandated 27 sq m for every three girls, the present hostel had 27 sq m for every five girls.
The State Government has ordered construction of a new hostel for nursing students at a cost of Rs. 3.23 crore. A total of 566 students are taking the three-and-a-half year course in CMCH.
While the MCI norms mandated 188 rooms, the present hostel building had only 80.
