Nurses hold protests over salaries

TNN | Updated: Oct 13, 2017, 05:33 IST

CHENNAI: A section of nurses at two private hospitals in the city was involved in a protest on Thursday. They demanded implementation of a Supreme Court order and the subsequent recommendation made by a committee at the Centre. This was basically to bring the salaries of nurses working in private hospitals on par with the salaries of nurses working in government-run hospitals.

Nurses at Kanchi Kamakoti Trust hospital have been protesting since Wednesday with nurses at SIMS hospital joining in on Thursday. They said the pay issue became prominent due to the dengue situation which led to them being overworked.

The SC in 2016 asked the Centre to form a committee to protect the livelihood of nurses in private hospitals. The committee decided on the nurses' salary based on beds in private institutions.
