A 70-year-old man underwent a coronary artery by-pass graft (CABG) surgery at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMCH) and the hospital said it was the first such surgery it performed and was successful.
This is the third government medical college hospital in the State to perform the open heart surgery for a bypass graft, after those in Chennai and Madurai, P. Kanagaraj, Dean of GMKMCH, told presspersons here on Tuesday.
The patient, M. Raju of Kalarampatti main road in the city, who had hypertension and diabetes, suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the hospital on July 19. The patient was stabilised with life-saving medicines.
Dr. Kanagaraj said coronary angiogram done by the cardiologists showed 90 per cent block in one of the three main blood vessels (left anterior descending artery), which needed intervention to improve blood flow and his heart function.
Since the block was near the vessel’s origin, angioplasty was ruled out and the specialists team decided to perform the by-pass graft surgery. The team led by Pon R. Rajarajan performed the CABG successfully on October 5 and the patient is convalescing at the hospital, the Dean said.
The Dean said that about 35 open heart surgeries were performed in the hospital in the last two years. The hospital has also successfully done 153 angioplasties.
