CHENNAI: Commemorating the 75th year of the Quit India Movement, the Arappor Iyakkam organised a public gathering, ‘Kollayane Veliyeru’ on Sunday. The gathering served as a stage which called for establishing Lokayukta in the State. “Transparency and accountability in government departments will be the key to abolish corruption.
“The freedom which we got from the British has been lost to these thieves,” said Jayaram Venkatesan, convener of Arappor Iyakam. “The nation stands first in corruption and Tamil Nadu leads all the States, which is not something that we should feel proud of. It is high time we let the younger generation question and come out to struggle,” said Vasanthi Devi, a former Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
V Suresh, general secretary of People’s Union for Civil Liberties, described it a negative sign when authorities do not allow people to question them. “The nation’s democracy was lost long back. There is noone other than the present generation who can rectify their parents’ mistakes,” he said.
The gathering attracted more than 300 people from all walks of life as well as those from other citizen activists movements.
Facebook page begun
A Facebook page where anyone can post complaints of corruption in any department was launched on the occasion.
