The Election Commission of India had on May 7, 2016 seized Rs 9 lakh from Sarathkumar at Nallur Vilakku near Tiruchendur.

Chennai: Actor Sarathkumar has failed to get any immediate relief to get back his Rs 9 lakh, seized by the Election Commission during the 2016 assembly by-election, as the Madras high court has directed him to approach the Supreme Court and get a clarification on the issue involving demonetisation.

When the appeal filed by Sarathkumar came up for hearing, a division bench comprising Justices Rajiv Shakder and N.Sathish Kumar directed him to approach the Supreme Court and get a clarification whether the high court can take up the case, since it is connected to demonetisation issue which is already seized of by the SC.

The Election Commission of India had on May 7, 2016 seized Rs 9 lakh from Sarathkumar at Nallur Vilakku near Tiruchendur. Since the cash seized comprised demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, he approached the high court to direct the ECI and Thoothukudi collector and Tiruchendur returning officer to return the money either by way of cheque or demand draft.
However, a single judge dismissed it. Aggrieved, he filed the present ap-
peal.
