As the first step in using technology to achieve the mission of ‘Operation Five Minutes’, the Salem Railway Division on Tuesday installed two Automated Ticket Vending Machines (ATVM) at Salem Railway Junction.
The ATVMs will ensure that the rail passengers get their unreserved ticket within five minutes without waiting in long queues in front of the ticket counters.
Divisional Railway Manager Shubhranshu commissioned the new facility.
Mr. Shubhranshu told reporters that 15 ATVMs have been installed at Salem, Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, Karur, Attur and Chinna Salem. These ATVMs will be functioning on trial basis.
The ATVMs will be operational round-the-clock and have been provided with user-friendly touch screen. A passenger can buy second class unreserved tickets for the mail/express/super fast express trains to any station. People can also purchase platform tickets, besides renewing the season tickets. Tickets can be cancelled before they got printed.
For collecting the ticket through ATVM, the passenger should possess smart cards, which are priced at Rs. 100. The recharge of these smart cards can be done at the exclusive counters available in the stations.
Top-up/recharge can be done for a minimum of Rs. 20 and then in multiples of Rs. 50 up to a maximum of Rs. 5,000 per card. These cards can be used by anyone and are therefore transferrable.
Initially to help the commuters, a retired railway employee will be posted at the ATVMs to create awareness and also to help them in collecting tickets.
