City Hottest in TN, Expect Further Temp Rise

Chennai unlikely to record extreme temperatures like in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana, but will continue to stay hot: Met office

CHENNAI: With South-Westerly winds hitting the coast, mercury levels are expected to rise even higher, putting Chennaiites in more discomfort as Kathiri Veyil inches towards its climax.

On Saturday, Nungambakkam recorded 40.6 degree Celsius, higher than normal by 2.5 degrees while Meenambakkam recorded 39.7, which was 0.6 degrees higher than normal. Humidity was recorded at a 65 per cent during the day which rose to 72 per cent during the night, according to the Regional Meteorological Department.

Meteorologists said that high humidity levels added to the heat and discomfort felt. “When humidity is more, the evaporation of the fluids that we perspire happens at a lesser rate leading to the feeling of discomfort,” said SB Thampi, deputy director of the Regional Meteorological Department.

Chennai recorded the highest temperatures among all districts on Saturday with Vellore registering 39.9 and Cuddalore recording 38.6 degrees. Weathermen have predicted partly cloudy skies with chances of isolated showers in the city even while the temperature is expected to stay around the 41 degree mark throughout the week.

“Chennai is unlikely to record extreme temperatures though there is a heat wave in the adjoining Andhra-Telengana region. Temperatures will gradually rise and the weather is likely to stay hot until June 20, which is when we expect the South-West monsoon,” Thampi added.

Rain brought some relief to Eraniel in Kanyakumari district which received 8 mm rainfall on Saturday. Dharmapuri, Erode, Krishnagiri, Karur, Tirupur and Vellore are among the districts predicted to have light rainfall.
