BENGALURU: Two hundred students doing MS Communication in various colleges affiliated to Bangalore University believe they're being cheated by the varsity.
A semester into their course, they're being told they'll get a Master of Arts degree although they have registered for Master of Science in Communication. They protested outside the Jnana Jyothi auditorium while a syndicate meeting was under way.
Students said this may have been a policy decision but the university did not inform them. "The decision was taken by the academic council in July based on the University Grants Commission's gazette notification. If they had told us even in September, we could have shifted to another college in December without losing one year," said one student.
Students were not informed about the change even when they paid their second semester fees. That receipt still says 'MS in Communication'.
"Our future is affected because an MS in Communication is required to get a PRO job in the Navy or Air Force and other sectors," a student said.
Vice-chancellor B Thimme Gowda said, "We have no option because the UGC pulled us up with regard to the nomenclature. The students don't have to worry because across the country, no MS (Communication) degrees will be accepted by the UGC. Former students can be given an explanatory letter if they need one," he said.
He said all colleges were informed about the change last year. "If the fee receipt and question papers say something else, these are clerical mistakes," he claimed.
