Inmates of jails in Madurai region who appeared for the SSLC examinations, recorded impressive performances. Of the 98 prisoners who appeared for the exam, 95 passed. The top score was 425 marks. Among the prisoners, 30 were from Madurai central prison, 33 from Palayamkottai central prison, 25 from Trichy central prison and 10 from Borstal School in Pudukottai.
G Muthuramalingam, 34, from Palayamkottai Prison was the topper with 425 marks.Superintendent of Madurai central prison R Arivudainambi said they had formed an education committee comprising inmates with BEd and MEd degrees. The committee undertook the task of teaching the prisoners and preparing them or SSLC examinations.
Besides, they also obtained teaching and motivation materials from Virudhunagar district, which has been maintaining the first place in Class 10 board examinations pass percenta g e for decades and Class12 results for 28 years.
"We also took help from NGOs and outside teachers to train our prisoners. We are glad they achieved very good marks," he said.
