MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday ordered notices to the health secretaries of the central and state governments on a petition that sought setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Madurai district.
The central government is planning to establish an AIIMS in Tamil Nadu, and the state government had proposed five sites -- Thoppur in Madurai district, Perundurai in Erode district, Pudukkottai, Sekkipatti in Thanjavur district and Chengalpet near Chennai.
In his petition, K K Ramesh of Madurai said, "In Tamil Nadu, Chennai has many major hospitals. But the southern districts have no such hospitals. The medical facilities are not adequate in those districts."
"Hence establishment of an AIIMS in Madurai district is very much essential for the people living in the southern districts," the petitioner said.
He further pointed out a central team's visit to Thoppur for a feasibility study.
When the matter came up for hearing, the division bench of T S Sivagnanam and G Chockalingam ordered notices to health secretaries and adjourned the matter to June 19.
