CHENNAI: A 27-year-old man from Tirupati was arrested by the cyber cell of the CB-CID for creating a page containing paedophilic content on social networking site Facebook. The page had more than 3,000 members.
Yadava Manikanta, a diploma holder in house-keeping, was arrested from his house after police tracked down his IP address. A complaint was filed by Chennai-based NGOs working for prevention of child abuse.
He used to upload pictures of children for a year. The page, which had comments of a sexual nature along with photos of children, was later blocked after a few people wrote to Facebook.
A senior police officer said investigations revealed Manikanta tried to create at least four pages in a year but failed after an error in the verification code. But he managed to create one four months ago and uploaded pictures, he added. "Inputs from telecom service provider helped us nab the offender," said an official.
Manikanta used to clandestinely shoot photographs of children on his mobile phone at public places in and around Tirupati. He usually shot tourists who visited the temple town and also sourced photos from the internet. He also circulated these photographs with members of a closed online group who in turn posted them on other pages of similar nature created by them.
CB-CID police registered a case under the Information Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). He was brought to Chennai and remanded in judicial custody. Further interrogations are on to track the network.
Enoch Moses, a resident of Porur, filed a complaint with the police commissionerate demanding action against the creator of the page and the members who have posted comments. The city police said offenders could get seven years rigorous imprisonment for the non-bailable offence. They have also sent a request to Facebook to share details of the creator of the page.
