Colleges owe Rs. 139 crore to govt.

DCE directs them to hand over excess fees collected

The Department of Collegiate Education (DCE) has directed aided colleges across the State to hand over the excess fees collected from students to the department.
Sources in the department said that several colleges were getting grants from the government and were supposed to hand over to the government the tuition and laboratory fees collected from students. They owe the government Rs. 139 crore for the 2004 to 2014 period.
Salaries
A senior official said the principals are responsible for handing over the money to the government, failing which their salaries will be stopped.
“If they do not comply with the order, we will consider stopping grants to these colleges,” he said.
