CHENNAI: A day after admitting students to MBBS courses, the selection committee in-charge of medical and dental admissions in the state was on Tuesday staring at nearly 700 vacant BDS seats, including 100 government quota seatsin self-financing dental colleges.

Just 4,000 students are left on the merit list, and the committee, which displayed 106 government quota seats and 681 management quota seats in self-financing colleges, has called eligible students to come for counselling. "We aren't sure if all seats will be taken. To prevent seats from going vacant we have decided to call candidates who have not applied, appeared, or have not been allotted a seat to apply," said secretary Dr G Selvarajan.

There are 100 seats each in the Government Dental College and state-run Raja Muthiah Medical College and 1,710 seats in 18 self-financing dental colleges. The fee in the government dental college is Rs 11,600, the tuition fee for all government quota seats in self-financing college was fixed at Rs 2.5 lakh and management seats at Rs 6 lakh. Fee for an NRI seat is Rs 9 lakh.

For the first time, all seats in self-financing colleges were filled by the state appointed committee and though the Dental Council of India extended the deadline for admissions to September 10, many seats may remain vacant.

On Tuesday, a notice asked candidates from all communities absent in previous counselling phases and those who hadn't taken seats before to "attend the counselling for allotment to government quota self-financing BDS seats in self-financing dental colleges scheduled on September 6 at 9.45 am."

Similarly, "as BDS seats are available in management quota in self-financing colleges, those who applied in management quota and not taken seats in previous counselling and NEET-eligible candidates who have not applied earlier, can come directly to Government Multi super speciality hospital, Omadurar Estate on September 6 at 2pm and apply in person," it said.
