Alagappa University earns another honour for maintaining cleanliness

174 out of 3,500 institutions were short-listed for Swachhta ranking

Alagappa University, Karaikudi, has won the third place in Swachhta ranking 2017 among the institutions of higher education in the country.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedekar presented the awards to 25 institutions, including Alagappa University, at a function in New Delhi recently, said a release from the university.
Alagappa University was among the 3,500 institutions of higher education that responded to an online invitation from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and submitted details on the prescribed format.
After the HRD Ministry shortlisted 174 institutions that scored 95% and above, officials from the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education inspected the university premises to get first-hand information, the release said.
Later, the top 25 institutions across various categories such as universities, colleges, technical institutions and government institutions were selected.
The exercise was aimed at generating peer pressure among institutions to focus on cleanliness.
University Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Subbiah told reporters on Monday that the officials visited the university premises on August 22 and 23 and checked the garbage disposal system in hostels and academic buildings, the disposal techniques, water supply systems and student-toilet ratio, the parameters for the award.
The team also inspected the kitchen, availability of running water, modernity of toilet and kitchen equipment and campus green cover, he said.
The Swachhta ranking was another feather in the cap of the university, the VC said adding the A plus Grade university had already won the World Clean and Green University Campus Award.
The Alagappa alumni garden, scientific waste management systems, hygienic ambience and societal linkages through village placement programmes spoke about the thrust given by the university on sustainable development.
In the process, the university had sensitised the student community about the importance of tree planting, he added.
