CHENNAI: Former BJP MP Tarun Vijay addressed students of Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute on Friday. Speaking at convocation ceremony of engineering students as the chief guest, he discussed with students the importance of rural and agricultural sector in India and the need for technological innovation in this sector.

"Some of the challenges plaguing this sector are scarcity of water, lack of infrastructure, illiteracy and lack of finances. To meet the forthcoming demand and challenges, we need young minds to engage in this challenge and suggest new ideas and methods to improve lives of the Indians," he told students.

He also remembered Dr MGR and said he was a legendary and charismatic leader who introduced many innovative ideas in film industry as well as in politics. Vijay said that many of the welfare schemes introduced by MGR were later implemented by central govt like mid-day meal schemes. He said that following Thirukural must inspire young students to be innovative and respect the rural talent among poor farmers and village artisans.

Talking to students, he said, "I wish in your next convocation function we may see rural farmers and artisans in their traditional attire occupying front row seats in this university". They are the professors of agriculture and arts and craft in the traditional wisdom area". He said that it is after centuries one gets a great PM like Narendra Modi. "Use all your talent to make the most of the positive atmosphere prevailing for skill development and Make In Indiaprojects. If your innovations are not helping improve rural sector, then it's a luxury. Copiers can only become followers, only innovators can become leaders," Vijay added.

Have you seen any innovation in the instruments of our masons, farmers, agriculturists and plumbers since last one hundred years? Have you been able to introduce a new gear system and a better axle mechanism to our bullock carts ? Then what is the use of your expensive education and research if it is not changing the lives of the poor farmers and craftsmen, he asked among thunderous applause by young students. Learn to respect your parents and rural people who are better equipped in protecting cultural, ancestral and traditional knowledge and wisdom, he said.
