Nod for construction of Karur medical college
Land formally handed over to DME by municipality
With the Supreme Court clearing the decks for construction of Karur Medical College, the municipality, which owns 17.49 acre at Sanapiratti, formally handed over the land to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME).
The land was handed over on Tuesday soon after receipt of the Supreme Court order that dismissed the appeal against construction of the medical college at Sanapiratti instead of Kuppuchipalayam.
The Sanapirati site was measured by surveyors in the presence of Collector K. Govindaraj and senior officials of Local Administration and Revenue departments and the DME, among others. The documents pertaining to transfer of the site from Karur Municipality to DME were also exchanged. In order to identify the boundary, stones were laid along the site.
Speaking to The Hindu , S. Revathi, Dean, Karur Medical College, said the Sanapirati site had been officially brought under the control of the DME. The construction would gain momentum as all hurdles had been cleared. The site would be handed over to the Public Works Department for carrying out the construction works.
Dr. Revathi said there was a need to alter the original site plan prepared in March 2016. It was prepared by taking into account the availability of 30.27 acre at Sanapiratti. However, the DME had taken control of only 17.49 acre.
The take over of the remaining land had been deferred for the time being as the proposed plan of setting up a park at the site was in the court. Hence, a new plan had to be prepared.
She said the Chief Architect of the Public Works Department had been asked to revise the plan. There was probability for construction of six storied buildings, as it would reduce the cost estimate to an extent.
The revised plan would be received within a week, she added.
