CHENNAI: The First Bench of the Madras High Court has extended the benefit of exemption from writing the Tamil examination for this year too to students of other States and studying in minority institutions on Monday.

The Bench of Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice R Mahadevan extended the benefit while passing orders on a batch of PILs from linguistic minority institutions praying for a directive to the State School Education authorities to exempt the students belonging to other States and having different mother tongues from writing the Tamil language exam and instead to write the exam in their mother tongue.

The senior counsel appearing for the PIL petitioners submitted that the students would be put to irreparable loss if they were forced to take the Tamil exam. Though the Act was brought into force in 2014, till date no rule was framed to implement it and the Government itself was not clear on its stand about its implementation, the counsel said.
